Gender neutral toilets

Gender neutral toilets are being introduced across UAL.

In 2016 the Students’ Union campaigned for the University to designate some of its toilets as gender neutral. These toilets are for everyone to use, in addition to male and female toilets.

Not everyone wants a label, and not everyone feels safe, or even identifies, as male or female. The gendered toilets that exist can make trans, non-binary and gender nonconforming students at UAL feel uncomfortable, and forces many to choose the ‘best option’ toilet, rather than one they actually feel at ease with.

- Scarlett Langdon, SU Welfare Officer

UAL is committed to being a place where gender diversity is expected and respected, and where trans people are free from discrimination. Providing gender neutral toilets is a small step towards realising this goal. Many trans people prefer to use female or male toilets, but have on occasion experienced discrimination when doing so. For this reason, staff and students are reminded not to challenge a person’s choice of facilities on the basis of their gender presentation.
