Academic Enhancement

The Academic Enhancement Team support colleagues at UAL in enacting social justice in higher education. We help you challenge the intersections of race, social class, gender, disability, faith and economic inequality to create a university where all staff and students feel valued recognised and accepted for who they are.

We aim to create reflective spaces for everyone in our UAL community to take action and learn alongside one another. Our work uses evidence-based approaches that embrace decolonising perspectives and explores the power of compassion and belonging in teaching and learning.

Awarding Gaps

The Academic Enhancement Team's work is underpinned by a commitment to enhancing students' experiences on their course. A key aspect of this is working as a whole institution to eliminate awarding gaps between home white students and home students of colour, and between home and international students.

We work with course teams, students and departments across UAL to offer educational development support by:

  • Working directly with course teams at unit level.
  • Delivering bespoke and open-to-all workshops and staff development sessions.
  • Offering 1:1 critical friend support; to talk through a teaching idea, reflect on an aspect of teaching and learning, act as a reader for re-approval, plus more.
  • Producing resources to support inclusive, decolonised and equitable teaching practices.
  • Developing research to inform policy at UAL and beyond.

We really welcome the opportunity to collaborate on resources, research and teaching, so please get in touch.

Creative Shift

Creative Shift joined Academic Enhancement in February 2022. The programme works on improving and shaping diversity and equity in the creative industries. The team aim to empower UAL students who are least represented in the creative sector, with a focus on retention and belonging in the creative industries.
