Biography
Anna Mossman’s practice explores the photographic negative, setting the instantaneous moment of the photograph against making repetitive line drawings over extended periods of time.
Mossman's drawings are presented in photographic negative form only. Found photographs of on-set actors and directors in conversation inspired Mossman’s most recent series, imaginatively reflecting upon these acts of communication.
The photo's formed the basis of her paintings before Mossman photographed them, to present only the negatives. These complementary bodies of work use repetition and inexact translation to make new images, copied and then photographed, from original human communication and conversations.
Mossman’s work is regularly exhibited in the UK and internationally, featuring at museums and galleries such as Galerie Raum mit Licht (Vienna), Tsingua University (Beijing), Voorkamer (Belgium), Vigo Gallery, Lisson Gallery (both London), Cleveland Museum of Art (Ohio), Konstakuten (Stockholm), Galerie Lelong (New York), Galerie Almine Rech (Paris), Juliet (Trieste), Tramway (Glasgow), Espace Cultuel Francois Mitterand (France), Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, and Walter Phillips Gallery (Banff, Canada).
Mossman’s work is also featured in the Winter 2011 issue of Source, The Photographic Review, pp. 32-39.
