Biography
Bernd Behr’s practice uses photography, film, sculpture and text to investigate architecture and design as sites for convergent social, political and narrative histories.
Research is a key element in Behr’s work, with his citation and re-contextualisation of cultural and historical references creating new possibilities for meaning, interpretation and use. Behr’s Contact and Concretion installation at The Hepworth Gallery in Wakefield approaches art as a form of social archaeology and intertextual dialogue. Developed specifically for the site, Behr entwines the museum’s histories and recent construction with local geography and industry, as well as Barbara Hepworth’s own practice and mythology.
Behr’s work is regularly exhibited in the UK and internationally, featuring at museums and art centres such as Bloomberg Space, Chisenhale (London), High Desert Test Sites (California), e-raum (Cologne), Württembergischer Kunstverein (Stuttgart), Storefront for Art & Architecture (New York) and the 2010 Whitstable Biennale.
Behr was shortlisted for the 2003 Beck’s Futures Award, and received a deciBel Award in 2006. He has also participated in several international residencies for Akademie Schloss Solitude (Stuttgart), Makan / Triangle Arts Trust (Jordan) and the Center for Land Use Interpretation (Wendover, Utah).
