Biography

I first began my studies at Central Saint Martins attending an Art & Design Foundation course specialising in Spatial Design, after which I progressed onto a Degree course.

I graduated from BA (Hons) Arts, Design and Environment in 2007, where I had chosen the Architecture pathway. During my final year of study I concentrated on Urban Development in particular the idea of 'Compact Communities' within the built up environment.

After graduating I was able to put into practice my skills obtained at Central Saint Martins through working with a small architectural practice in London. Here I worked on an eclectic range of projects from bespoke residential housing to the large scale International Park scheme and High-Rise mixed-use tower in Tehran, Iran. I recently had my degree work published in an International Urban Design magazine, celebrating students achievements and innovative ideas for Urban regeneration.

Why did you decide to study at Central Saint Martins?

What attracted me to Central Saint Martins is the individuality and innovative thinking visible in the students work. The course I had chosen to pursue allowed for a very open approach to architecture and design, which appealed to me.

What was the best bit about living and studying in London?

London to me is the main hub of design, with large resources at your disposal. The multitude of galleries and art venues allow for unexpected exchanges and can spark inspiration.

What top tip would you give to students who are beginning their studies?

Explore... Central Saint Martins has a wealth of resources and experience so seek it out!

And for students about to graduate?

Be patient, and make sure you do what you enjoy. You're probably unlikely to get the dream job straight away, but never be disheartened. Try and get all the experience you can, and don't think too much about the money, which is hard especially with the huge student loans you are likely to incur. Seek advice from your tutors about job prospects as they are professional in the field and contact career services at Central Saint Martins.

What are you up to now? How did you get there?

Currently I am completing my Diploma in Architecture (part II) at London Metropolitan University, where I have been fortunate enough to take part in a project abroad in Mumbai, India, building schools for local street children.

It was especially hard after completing my degree to progress onto the next stage as I need to both gain a year's experience on top of obtaining Part I (registration for architects), which took up a large majority of my time, but in the end it all paid off.

How has Central Saint Martins helped in your chosen path?

It has given me the practical and professional experience, and allowed me to be an individual rather than following the norm. I am especially grateful for the deep-routed theoretical and conceptual take on Architecture and Design, which I can transcend onto my next course.
