Biography
Luke Stevens, graduated from Womenswear in 2012. His collection was Shortlisted for Nova.
CSM’s Nova Award nominees are chosen by their Course Leaders and represent the best talent across the degree shows. Luke was also awarded the Jenny Packham Bursary award in 2012. Here he provides an insight into the work which earned him the prestigious nominations.
Womenswear Graduate 2012
“My work explores the value of the ordinary, the assuming and the overlooked within fashion design. With a particular focus upon craftsmanship and make the collection draws inspiration from the most mundane of clothing references and materials, while also highlighting the potential of mistakes and faults as a design tool. Fleece and polyester suiting are mixed with silks, linens and shearling to question the perceived value of materials. Oversized underwear, polyester school trousers and fleeces are constructed with elastic to mimic the effects of a stretched or shrunk seam. Finished garments are over printed with pigment to exaggerated the effects of a stain and care labels, featuring customised washing symbols, replace the designer label, exaggerated, flashy and on show”.
