Biography

Fernando Jorge was born in Brazil and studied product design in Sao Paulo, where he lived and worked until relocating to London. His professional experience includes 10 years designing for internationally renowned Brazilian fine jewellery manufacturers.

Fernando's MA project takes inspiration from the rich and pluralistic conceptions of body, gender and sexuality in contemporary Brazilian culture and shamelessly exploits the blurry crossover between stereotypes and identity. Brazil's cheeky association with sensuality is very easily identifiable, from the bombshell supermodels to the mulatas in carnival, including the half-naked girls and boys that crowd the beaches, the infamous toy boys and glamorous transvestites. This image of a sensual, permissive paradise, which has its roots in the first encounter of the native Brazilians with the Europeans, is perpetuated through the foreign eye, the one that registers only what is different, isolating it from the nuances of its context.

Fernando selectively combines a small network of experienced craftsmen with the infra-structure of larger Brazilian manufacturers to realise his designs. This allows him access to an array of uniquely cut Brazilian stones and to state of the art contemporary industry gold manufacturing technology. The results are elegant and ambiguously provocative pieces, which translate the latent sensuality typically associated by Brazilians and visitors as a characteristic of the country.

Fernando's MA project has been the starting point of a larger investigation that explores what Brasilidade (Brazilianness) might mean and represent in a contemporary global context. This has formed the heart of his now globally successful, eponymous brand.

Fernando's work has been widely covered in international press, is regularly featured on the international Fashion circuit and available through a global network of prestigious stockists. Fernando has been shortlisted for Emerging Accessory Designer at the British Fashion Awards 2014.
