Biography

Gabrielle Jourdan studied at Cambridge University before training as an actor at Drama Centre under founders Yat Malgram and Christopher Fettes. She has worked extensively in theatre, film and television including leading roles at the Royal National Theatre and Royal Shakespeare Company.  In 1999 she won a prestigious Ian Charleson award for her portrayal of Jessica in The Merchant of Venice directed by Trevor Nunn at the RNT. For the last ten years she has combined acting with directing and teaching. Directing projects include working with Peter Gill at the Sheffield Lyceum, Richard Wilson at the Sheffield Crucible and Daniel Evans on numerous projects for The Royal Court and Young Vic.

What I teach

My teaching approach is founded on the work of Stanislavski and brings in techniques honed at Drama Centre under the tutelage of Christopher Fettes and Yat Malgrem. The goal is to create dynamic, truthful characterisations that are rich in detail and encourage extraordinary performances that step beyond the conventional.

I teach specialist sessions focusing on sight reading and audition technique. I look at demystifying the audition process and learning strategies to improve performance in audition contexts. Sight reading is an essential part of the process – we explore strategies and techniques to enhance sight reading skills and create rich, truthful performances. We work on contemporary and classical material as well as film and television scripts. Together we explore how the skills learned throughout the training at Drama Centre can be channelled into ensuring successful auditions that build exceptional careers.
